Jan.5 - Jan.25, 2019
Prakriti Aalay, Dharamsala
"Freedom is discipline"
This wonderful and unique retreat will take place on the foothills of the Himalayas at HH the Dalai Lama's town in exile, Dharamsala. There, all best tibetan artists live and produce the traditional buddhist art of depicting deities, such as buddhas and bodhisatvas as a tool for meditation.
We will be learning about the buddhas and its symbols, visit different tibetan art schools around the region and having as guests some of the artists who will join in teaching as well. We are going to visit adorned and active temples where we'll also use as a study field to produce our own thangka piece.
Some of the temples are the Norbulingka Temple, the Nygma temple in Sidhpur, HH the Dalai Lama Tsuglagkhang Monastery, Tai Situ Rimpoche Sherabling temple, temples in Bir as Dzongzar Rimpoche's retreat monastery.
Tibetan Buddhist Thangka Painting is, before being a practice of art, a discipline. By learning and following the symbolic proportion of the deities, we tune in with the proper energy of the deity and in a ritualistic manner of tuning intention and action, we will be first drawing and then painting. Each participant will be able to choose the deity he or she like to paint and will be oriented on the initial drawing, after making of the canvas
By creating it it on a ritualistic manner, Tiffani Gyatso introduces you to thangka, a Tibetan art form of painting Buddhist icons on canvas, and shows you how it can be used as a supportive tool in meditation and self-discovery.
You begin by exploring the sacred imagery of the Tibetan pantheon of deities, learning about the symbols, and discovering how they can guide you to refine your vision and intention. You then move to practice by making the canvas: stitching, stretching, and layering natural plaster over cotton. Creating a thangka surface requires time and dedication, which aligns mind and body for the drawing and, finally, the painting of your chosen buddha like: Sakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, Green, White or Red Tara, Manjushri, Vajrasatva, Vajrayogini or Vajrapani.
You follow the practice of sacred arts with prayers and mantras to enhance self-discipline, devotion, and concentration.
Throughout the weeks you go through all of the stages of creating a traditional thangka painting, immersed on the tibetan culture, tradition and its living temples and be back home with a new and unique practice and art piece done by you.
There is no need to be an expertise in painting or any art form or even to have deep notion in Tibetan Buddhism – this is a learning experience where everyone with true intention to learn and dedicate its own time for it, is warmly and joyfully welcomed!
